ARRL Youth Activities

A Boy Scout Merit Badge Day for the Shelby District was held on January 31, 2004 at Oak Mountain High School.  There were over 400 boy scouts there trying to earn different merit badges.  We held a morning and afternoon class to cover the merit badge and to teach a few amateur radio basics.  The boy scouts were allowed to talk on the radio at the end of the classes.  There were also stations set up where we practiced sending our names in morse code.  The group of scouts that we had were very eager to learn and asked lots of questions.  We had 8 boys scouts in the morning class and 11 in the afternoon class and all 19 scouts earned their radio badge, http://www.meritbadge.com/bsa/mb/093.htm.  We had a large group of amateur radio operators helping with the classes.  A total of 12 amateurs from both the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club and the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club who helped with the classes.  We appreciate all the people that helped to make this event a success!  It was a fun day for everyone.
